October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Somewhere Over the Rainbow LLC: October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

October is a special month for families who have suffered the loss of a child during pregnancy or shortly following birth. It is known as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month, marked by “The International Wave of Light” on October 15.

Manchester, New Jersey (PRWEB) October 01, 2013 (www.prweb.com)

On October 25, 1988, (then) President Ronald Reagan designated the month of October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. What an amazing act of love and compassion he showed towards families all over the United States. This later spurred the 2002 petition, October 15th Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, to designate this day specifically as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a day set aside in which to honor and remember these babies lost. It was an American movement started by Robyn Bear, Lisa Brown, and Tammy Novak. They petitioned the governors of each of the 50 states as well as the federal government, and by October 15, 2002, 20 states had signed proclamations to recognize the date, which was observed for the very first time that year in 2002. 11 years later, all 50 states recognize October 15 as “Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day”.

“A wife who loses a husband is called a widow. A husband who loses a wife is called a widower. A child who loses his parents is called an orphan. There is no word for a parent who loses a child. That’s how awful the loss is.”

  1. I heard of your website from a music video by Daughtry called Gone To Soon. I lost my two month old Daughter Alishia Grace Ford-Pentecost last year on January.28,2013 from an over enlarged heart. She left a 6yr. old brother, a Mother, and Father who miss and love her with all our hearts. I’ve been trying to find a group or organization so I can share my story and give back to Mother’s who have or are going thru a loss of a child like I have. Thank You for this day to remember all our babies that we were either pregnant with or were infants when they passed away. It’s inspiring to know there are Mother’s and Father’s who understand.

    Thank You,
    Stephanie Ford

    1. Dear Stephanie,

Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your story. I am so very sorry to hear about your daughter. My heart goes out to you hon. No parent or family should every have to experience this kind of loss. We lost our son due to severe prematurity due to to HELLP Syndrome that forced me to deliver him 3 months early. We lost him on July 20th, 2010 after 3 1/2 months of fighting to survive in the NICU. Although it’s been almost 4 years, a day doesn’t go by that I don’t think of him and feel the pain of his loss. It was because of him and because of my subsequent miscarriages that I began this blog. Since I created my blog a year ago, I have made a lot of connections and friendships with other women who have experienced loss of a baby through miscarriage, still birth and infant loss, and it has really helped me cope. I have also felt joy in helping others through sharing my story. It makes me happy that my post about pregnancy loss and infant loss gave you some comfort. I pray that you will find comfort from some of the other blogs I follow too.

I’m surprised and amazed that you were able to find my website from a music video! Was there a link to my website? I just looked up the song. It’s so beautiful. I watched every video I could find on youtube, and can’t stop crying. I will definitely be sharing this song in an upcoming post! ! I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Do you have your own blog? If you don’t and you want to share your story, I would be happy to post it on my blog. If you decide to start blogging, let me know so I can follow your feed and I will definitely post a link to it from my website.

Sending you the biggest, warmest hug <3

  2. Wonderful blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News.
Do you have any tips on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there!

    Thank you

    1. Thanks! And I’m glad you found my blog through Yahoo news! That’s amazing! I actually have no idea how it ended up in there, except perhaps because I linked to a news article from last year that was connected to Yahoo News?
