Supplements

The following is a list of the supplements I take for preconception and prenatal care. I hope you find this information helpful and informative. However, please discuss any supplements you are thinking of taking with your doctor prior to taking anything.

All supplements listed below are natural and soy free. Most are gluten free.

Prenatal and Preconception Care:

Prenatal Vitamin every day with 1000 mcg of folic acid

DHA

(Tip: A prenatal with DHA included works even better because you don’t need to take 2 different pills)

For Uterine Health and Healing:

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea and/or Nettle Leaf Tea

I like Traditional Medicines Organic Brand. There is a lot of information about the benefits of both these teas for uterine health and for boosting fertility. Nettle leaf tea has a nourishing blend of Vitamins A, C, D and K, calcium, potassium, phosphorous and iron and is associated with boosting fertility in both men and women. Red raspberry leaf tea strengthens and tones the muscles of the pelvic area and the uterus. It is also reported to help with morning sickness and help prevent miscarriage but I’m nervous about taking any herbal teas and supplements during pregnancy so I stop drinking these teas after ovulation and resume again at the start of a new cycle.

Anitoxidents and Nutritional Supplements:

Juice Plus+ Garden and Orchard blend capsules.

There are published studies indicating that Juice Plus+ is beneficial to take during pregnancy to help prevent preeclampsia and maintain overall prenatal health.

Dr. Foster’s Essential Nutrients – Organically Grown, Alkalizing Whole Food, Nutritional Supplement

Ingredients: Kamut Wheat Grass and juice, Spirulina, Chlorella broken-cell algae, Barley grass, Alfalfa grass, and Purple Dulse Seaweed, in a base of stabilized rice soluble and bran. Vegan and Gluten Free.

Where to get it: I get it at my acupuncturist office but it is also available at www.drfostersessentials.com

If Dr Foster’s Essential Nutrients is not available near you, you can try any greens formula and/or wheatgrass. Whole foods and other natural food stores carry organic greens formulas.

Royal Jelly

I believe of all the supplements on this page or that I’ve taken in the past, Royal Jelly is the most important one to take. I have no proof of this. It’s only my experience and my opinion, but with both my successful  pregnancies, I was the most diligent about taking the Royal Jelly and I really think it helped my egg quality.

Royal Jelly is thought to help to strengthen your eggs. It contains a complex blend of amino acids, vitamins, essential enzymes, sterols, proteins and sugars, essential fatty acids, iron and calcium. It may help to regulate your period and make ovulation more predictable, strengthen your eggs, increase sperm counts in men, protect eggs and sperm from free radicals, increase sperm health and motility and reduce inflammation throughout the body. Because there is not enough information about the safety of Royal Jelly during pregnancy, I stop taking after ovulation and resume again at the start of a new cycle

I like Now Foods Brand. They are gluten and soy free. I take 2-3 high potency, 1500 mg capsules from cycle day 1 until the day after ovulation. I also take 1-2 teaspoons of the Now Foods brand Royal Jelly in honey during the ovulation phase of my cycle (CD 10 – 1 day after ovulation).

CoQ10 Ubiquinol

More and more fertility doctors are beginning to recommend CoQ10 for patients that are undergoing fertility treatments. It is thought to improve egg health and egg quality, especially in older women. CoQ10 is also an antioxidant and helps rid the body of dangerous free radicals. For more information, visit How Ubiquinol Can Improve Your Chances of Conception.

I also took this every day very diligently during both successful cycles. It’s hard to say if the Royal Jelly and the CoQ10 were the magic ingredient that helped my eggs those cycles or if it was just really amazing luck, but I do recommend these two supplements more than anything else on this page.

There is not a lot of information about it’s safety during pregnancy though it is generally considered safe, but to be on the safe side, I stop taking after ovulation and resume again at the start of a new cycle.

I like Now Foods brand: Upiquinol 100mg (Higher Bioviability Active Antioxidant Form of CoQ10.

For Hormonal Balance and to Increase Cervical Mucus

Evening Primrose Oil

This really works! I had been noticing that I didn’t have as much fertile Cervical Mucus as I used to, but after only just starting to take EPO,  I noticed quite a lot of EWCM for several days leading up to ovulation! For more information visit, Enhance Overall Fertility with Evening Primrose. It is recommended to take EPO at the start of your cycle and continue to take it daily until ovulation and then stop.

It’s important to stop after ovulation because it can cause uterine contractions.

I like Now Foods brand: Super Primrose – 1300mg of Evening Primrose Oil. One capsule per day was enough for me to notice a big change in my CM.

For Digestive Health:

Probiotics

I like Jarrow Formulas – Jarro-Dophilus EPS non-refrigerated formula. Gluten Free.
